As dogs have become a more prominent part of American society over the past few decades, dog owners have increasingly found doors opening to their pooches that had previously been closed. Everything from hotels and restaurants to trains and airplanes have begun to allow customers to bring in their dogs, but few avenues have been opening so quickly as dog friendly shopping.
Partially due to the rise of dogs in celebrity culture, and a changing understanding about the cleanliness and politeness of pooches, many stores across America have begun to allow patrons to bring their dogs inside. From Madison Avenue jewelers and boutiques on Rodeo Drive to mom-and-pop stores and local convenience stores, the number of dog friendly shops has been dramatically increasing. However, from the dog owner’s perspective, one must realize that such shops are a privilege, not a right, and a patron should always return the courtesy shown by such establishments, in order to make sure the trend continues.
Firstly, it is important to understand that not all shops and stores are going to be welcoming to pets. Feel out the attitude of a shopping area as you walk around (certain parts of the country, such as Mendocino County in California, are especially friendly to dogs, while others are not), and be sure to ask permission before bringing your pooch into what you think are pet friendly shops. Calling ahead to inquire, or perhaps going to an information booth to ask about what stores allow dogs in a mall or shopping center, are also not bad ideas.
